Listen to Ron’s Podcast on Ask The Expert
Ron Helton is first, and foremost, a man of great faith. Whether ministering to the homeless community in his hometown of Conroe, leading groups in Bible study and prayer, or pastoring a church in a tiny third world country in the former Soviet Union, his greatest passion is to serve the Lord wherever he goes. He is also a proud husband of 43+ years, father of three adult children, and a grandfather several times over.
So how did our founder and CEO get his start in the flood industry?
In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Allison, the costliest natural disaster in the history of Houston, Texas, in which 38.6 inches of rain fell over the city within a six-day time period, flooding 73,000 houses and causing an estimated $1.94 billion in damage, Ron Helton moved into the Houston metropolitan area. Newly employed as a Senior Project Manager by the prestigious architectural firm, PageSoutherlandPage, LLP, Mr. Helton was immediately placed on the architectural/engineering team with full responsibility for providing comprehensive flood protection of the Baylor College of Medicine campus located within the Texas Medical Center. This introduction to flood proofing of one of the premier medical research institutions in the world launched Mr. Helton on a pathway that has eventually given birth to the first state-of-the-art flood specialty company, FloodSafe USA, LP as the industry leader in flood protection services in the U.S. Many years of experience in the specialty discipline of comprehensive flood protection were to first be acquired, however.
Recognizing its vulnerability and a very strategic need for flood protection within the low lying Texas Medical Center area, M. D. Andersen Cancer Center soon contracted with PageSoutherlandPage, LLP for comprehensive flood protection of its own vast campus and Mr. Helton was named Senior Project Manager for this multi-million dollar effort as well. As a decisive team leader with extensive experience in selecting, developing, and managing effective team talent sufficient for this massive task, two of the city’s leading medical institutions and employers have been protected from the onslaught of future flood events.
Along the U.S. Gulf Coast, severe weather knows no end and it has no boundaries and soon the city of New Orleans was ensnared in its own historic catastrophic flood event created by Hurricane Katrina. Once again, Ron Helton and his team of professionals at PageSoutherlandPage, LLP were called upon to provide reconstruction and flood protection services for Tulane University Hospital in downtown New Orleans and to perform assessment services for a broad range of other institutions, including the campus of Tulane University, which sustained extensive flood damage as a result of the levee breaches within the city.
As a 1973 graduate of Texas A & M University with a degree in Environmental Design, and with highly developed flood protection assessment skills acquired through his years of service as a senior architectural manager overseeing multi-million dollar institutional flood protection projects, Mr. Helton was asked by recognized industry leaders and federally funded flood consultants to consider the urgent need for flood protection of this nation’s homes and light-framed commercial buildings. The high standard of flood protection technology used on premier multi-million dollar projects was much needed in providing safe-guards for the homes and businesses in America from coast-to-coast. Ron Helton accepted the challenge, and the intricate development of FloodSafe USA patented technology and flood proofing methodologies for single and multi-family homes and light-framed commercial buildings was launched.
Like a scientist working in his laboratory, Mr. Helton researched, developed, refined, tested, perfected, patented, and placed into production the first fully-automatic (100% passive) comprehensive flood protection technology for residential and light-frame commercial building use in the USA! Creative design/engineering, hybrid materials and methodologies, specially designed and retro-fitted Flood Doors and specially designed and engineered Flood Windows, architecturally integrated state-of-the-art composites, industrial-grade coatings and sealants literally build flood protection into the building envelope without any need for human intervention at the unexpected moment of a flash flood event. Just close the door and the home or building is FloodSafe!
In addition, and as a bi-product of Ron Helton’s many years in the design/construction profession, cost and aesthetics of the end product has been a major consideration. FloodSafe USA is the composition of many years of personal development and growth of its founder in land development, building design, commercial construction, home building, and at last — flood proofing technology for America’s homes and buildings, and the vast wealth of knowledge and experience that Ron Helton brings to the table is part of the FloodSafe USA package delivered on every project.
FloodSafe USA, LP …….. “Never Flood Again!”
